Say what you will, but what you say will come back to haunt you Suspension of belief can’t reach this towering facade In the throne of emulation it powers through the chain reaction That’s sustained in the distraction trying to find the fatal flaw It tip-toes around you, but never claims to have ever found you Somewhere in the circle seeking for a place to start It was bled of all its longing there where you first heard your calling And lost between someone you were and what you have become Faint recognition is taking stabs at a sense of wonder Sneaking suspicion beneath this vision led aloft And it’s not like you have to, that is to say, nothing could prepare you For the violent intervention on this path to your resolve Certain demise you know you must, so morning can rise to blue dusk You’ll learn to respect what you can’t perfect Or know when to walk away The name of your bastion may be the one that holds you captive In the grip of paralysis, the chalice of the gods And the purpose of this mask is to make you feel vaguely attracted But all the pain of the masses knows exactly what you are The moment you walked away

Anomaly 03:49
Floating listless, no wind to compel directionExtremes that have bound your feet with a hanging question There’s nothing to see here if you live in fear to embrace the other The final leap being the furthest thing a stones throw can bring Do you bend more towards feeding a fallacy Collect your thoughts to adore the intimate rhapsody Until everything that you ignored is gone, isn’t it sad to see Somebody too self absorbed to know that this doesn’t have to be Remote in your interest on the path of least resistance While grief is tugged by the leash of decomposition Then planting your feet on solid ground Between the roots and the reaching branches Where fallen leaves like shattered dreams beneath you there Suddenly release your grip from the thousand mile long stare Pulling the sword from your intended reality Wiggling it back and forth till all the pieces are scattering Shedding its form so the only thing that is mattering Is now pressing full force into the valley free You’ve just been reborn you’re The living anomaly
3.
Hungry for sanity, a crying shame towards humanity That wanders by fast asleep like they’re the only ones Held down by gravity They live to comply Only the loneliest Roll over and die Only the loneliest One too many monoliths that fire could never decimate Replacing our inner voice with a tome that regurgitates A mantra that never ends or re-begins To make up your mind like a child again, wild again To stubbornly defy the path you’ve been prodded along all along Repeating with the tide that you’ll be sailing on Repress into the great beyond The spaceship is taking off Steady in your trajectory mincing the world into many words While there’s a man screaming on the street Still desperate to be heard Because he can’t hear himself anymore The harder he tries Only the loneliest The more people shy Only the loneliest Pushed to the periphery saved only for the burning pile Drunk in your tomfoolery, curiosities pulling the Urge to look but never leap, fully complete You run from their lives, beside yourself, hide yourself Competing for the prize, but did you make it up, are you waking up In the midst of their demise you hear them calling out But you can’t afford to turn around They’re lost souls to be never found
4.
Evil Eye 05:54
You pay your reverence to the bridges burned These desperate measures had gone on far too long An inconvenience in place of choice That made me watch you live in the moment as I lost my voice It pulls away and then it falls apart The only sense I have left is obligation Follow the leader but not my heart Then you can just run through the motions if you get that far This deprivation you feed isn’t medicine Sleep without dream whispers a place of no escape, insignificance All rhyme or reason buried deep in cryptic metaphor Until nothing’s left but the extreme you were asking for Does this illusion want to be alone And claim divine inspiration solely as its own Something meaningful to bear my cross And save this falling from grace as if it’s not my fault I don’t want to feel this empty woe But then again this sadness is mutual Pins and needles as I’m waking up I guess that the dream is over, but now I can’t stand up You hide and seek beneath the veil of the evil eye Where nothing is sacred because it’s all deemed to be scrutinized Two lives, too late, hell bent, too straight And if you don’t look back you can’t see what you’re running from There’s a reason it’s not my fault Didn’t know if you noticed

Fly 03:14
I just wanna fly Soaring sober over pools of refreshing water To taste all that’s mine To demystify what once had blown my mind I don’t wanna die A misnomer staring vacant from the shadow To fake everything’s fine To be distracted from the daemon at my side They wake to make the day their slave Just giving their lives away as if it had become a burden I must multiply Shed my seed on the shameful deed of a filthy dagger To raise heaven on high To be trapped just like the genie all his life Only in battle can we cry They wake to make the day their slave Just giving their lives away as if it had become a problem Life is a leap, flailing arms, changing colors With one foot still caught in the snare And you cry disbelief while the storms chase each other Do you long to belong to despair
7.
Dreams Drift 03:17
What kinds of dreams drift past your window And what fears reside inside your pain Cast into the infinitude that you can’t explain A resilient mystery surrounds While you’re underneath of the covers sleeping Without a sound How do you take in the beauty of your landscape What kinds of details catch your eye And what unseen force makes them want to even try When your head’s just looking down onto the ground There’s a motive buried deep in my heart Trapped in fruitless reverie it dies hard To the character I play that’s used to drive people away Until there is nothing left of me but my scars What lies beneath of your intentions What kinds of forms are you trying to shape To give back unto this world from which you take And is there anybody else around you that can relate
8.
Dying Words 05:18
I think of all the tension pulling at me I am my own response ability I sit alone in my room being the weight of the world to you In dire need Cold stare face to face still can’t look you in the eye Time and space it lingers on Wishing this trap door would let me fall This alter ego repremending Without fail, without ending The pedulum swings off center out of intrigue Crushing the spirit before you could hear it Trying to lead you away From this most rational disease Ranting on and on about nothing Dying words just to appease them This sole image of perfection is a lesser of two evil twins Prized possessions that you horde away Are for you and you alone This hollowed earth for the earthlings The ceremonial purging Freedom is extra-terrestrial as it feels The apocalypse is here and its real So give thanks to everything that you aren’t And practice patience in your heart and in your deeds This belated invitation can now put these bones to rest And stop trying to breathe life into what’s long been dead This lonely namesake now burning The fallen angel returning
9.
Lull of Byes 02:15
Loneliness pulls me like the clouds pull the sky Immersed in this universe with time on my side Until the edge of the sea covers me with its never ending sigh Not even a thousand photographs could capture this moment As it leaves me now The singular moment is to be fully aware Living breathing proof deep from the abyss into which I stare It’s a nice introspective place you are always welcome here We knew you didn’t want the fanfare Did you?

Dirge 03:36

about

It’s been almost ten years since John Bellows released Fast Hits, the 2013 LP of frantic bangers that would cap his reign as the tireless titan of Chicago’s bizarro basement scene. To describe his latest collection as Slow Jams might be facile, but surely his move to the remote, luminous outpost of San Juan Island, in Washington’s Puget Sound, caused a relaxation of tempo in John’s soul. The gorgeous video for lead single Fly gives a sense of the mercurial landscape John and his musical/partner Glenn Hendrick call home, and it does not seem like a place for rushing.

John has always been a questing, questioning songwriter, but where Fast Hits busied itself with a young man’s demand for answers --Does this rule or does this doesn’t? Why are you stalling? Can you admit that you’re lost?--Certain Demise sits with much more reflective, perhaps unanswerable queries: what kinds of dreams drift past your window? And what fears reside inside your pain? John is a slow chef, and lets tunes and arrangements simmer for years— a couple of songs actually predate his move to the island— but here they sound fully lived-in and perfectly set. Glenn is key: she and John harmonize only as longtime crime-partners can, and Glenn wraps the melodies in blankets of flute and strings that ward off the chill of unknowing (fellow islanders Noah Atchley, Nickie Davis, and Gavin Goodrich also contribute, as well as Chicagoan Sara Condo). None of which is to say that John has necessarily mellowed; his quieter intensities can be just as vehement as his rock messiah freakouts--and there are moments here of Crazy Horse barnstorming. But he does seem looser than ever, at home in the world and his skin and grateful for both, even in the face of (hard-won acceptance of?) the Certain Demise that awaits us all.
